Dear Slice,
After reading the recent "Hipsters are the new Jocks" MESH - (International Electro-rapper, Brooklyn, NY) and then following the link and reading the recent article by Ad busters (which you can read here) I thought 'Am I a Hipster?'
I couldn't decide my answer- if it was going to be a quite guilty nod or a full throated no (which would be full of an air of superiority because unlike everyone else I hadn't given into it.)
Before I made my decision, there were a few things to consider:

1. I own a bike.
2. I have a blog.
3. One side of my head is shaved.
4. I wear a denim shirt with black leggings.
5. I've met Mark Hunter.
6. Vice magazine was my hero from the age of 12.

So this put me at about 85% hipster. The last 15% was empty because of the absence of lo-fi pictures with analog cameras in my life. There were no Polaroid photos on my wall- nor were there Polaroid photos on my facebook. I was worried. How could I become a total 100% hipster without the photos. (And just an after thought- the fact that I was worried and consciously aware of this- adds at least another 10% to me being a hipster. As 50% of being a Hipster is thinking about being a hipster.)

I was too anxious to add those cool kids I met last night on facebook because I didn't have the goods to back up the meeting. I didn't have the photos. I avoided responding to their friend requests for a couple of days and then joy oh joy. I stumbled across Secret Hipster Heaven.

Poladroid is a program you can download free that lets you turn your ordinary photos in polaroid photos. Above is my friend's photo she turned into a polaroid using the program.

Obviously - in hipster reality- we would all like to have genuine polaroid photos but we have to realise this isn't always going to turn out. If we want to live the dream- we're going to have to make a few sacrifices along the way and I am ready and mature enough to make such decisions.

I've already got four new profile pictures and three new totally rad* friends.

Love Frankie
(who is currently 110% hipster)

xxx

*rad is hipster for cool. Not cool in the sense of obviously trying to be cool, cool in the sense of not trying to be cool, just naturally cool (but in this not trying, a lot of thinking and pondering and considering goes into it. So really just not trying in an obvious way to be cool , cool. )

WE'VE MOVED -- > SLICE IS DEAD! HABIT IS FOREVER!

Find image and full article at Habit Magazine

Over the last 3 years the iconic Ray-Ban "Wayfarer" sunglasses have been making a resurgence in pop culture and fashion. Created in 1952 as a revolutionary form of sunglass eye wear, the Wayfarer design made use of plastic frames rather than the tradition metal. Although originally developed for pilots and targeted towards men, Wayfarers were quickly adopted by Hollywood starlets like Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. John F. Kennedy was also a notable fan of this particular Ray-Ban design. In 1961, in a little film entitled, "Breakfast at Tiffany's", Audrey Hepburn's character, Holly Golightly, legendized the Wayfarer, opting to wear the design in tortoise shell.

Throughout the late 60's and 70's, Ray-Ban Wayfarers experienced a slump in sales and were on the verge of discontinuation before signing a deal with Unique Product Placement of Burbank to have their sunglasses used in films and television programs throughout the 80's. Perhaps their most successful placement was in the 1983 film, Risky Business, starring Tom Cruise. Sales of the Wayfarer took off and this design managed to define the entire 80's decade... cont

I'm sure many of you have heard about this album already, but if you haven't it is one download you must get your mouse on... Yes... I said DOWNLOAD!

Danger Mouse aka Brian Burton (Legendary DJ/producer behind the Jay Z/Beatles mash-up Grey Album and one half of the duo, Gnarls Barkley) has teamed up with Sparklehorse (YES... infamous indie electro-rock group led by Mark Linkous) and David-Lynch (all the hipsters out their just popped one in their pants) to produce an epic collaboration between some of the industries best. The albums songs were written by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse and David Lynch is credited for creating the 100+ photo book compilation which is to serve as a narrative to the accompanying music. The artists that they brought on board to perform are credited for having a hand in the composition and over all production of their track. Which artists are being featured on this album? The Flaming Lips, James Mercer of The Shins, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Iggy Pop, The Pixies, The Cardigans, Frank Black, Vic Chesnutt... I mean... the list goes on.
It almost sounds too good to be true right?... Well it almost was...

Due to a dispute with the label (EMI) the distribution of the album did not go according to plan and the artists decided to "stick-it-to-the-man" by releasing the album with a blank CD-R enclosed along with a note stating, "For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will." (Basically they are alluding to downloading the album illegally).

The album has yet to be officially released, and there is some doubt as to whether or not it ever will be. Burton is encouraging fans to get a copy of the album by any means necessary. The David Lynch Photographs are available for purchase from their website. It is limited to 5000 copies and it is being soled at $50.00 a pop.

The album can be streamed here and downloaded here

Enjoy this gift from the music gods,
SLICE

P.S. An exhibition will run in the Los Angeles Michael Kohn Gallery from May 30, showcasing the photographs alongside the music.

Okay, so today on twitter some person from T.O. started following us, so we followed them back. On their update wall we noticed a post that said "Hilarious website, no doubt there are people from #Toronto on it. http://twurl.nl/2plda0". So we clicked on it. The blog is entitled "Look at this Fucking Hipster" and immediately we thought...Jackpot!

The blog is essentially driven by user-content. People submit pictures and videos of themselves or of others depicting hipster fashion, life or culture. We came across the following video on the blog with this quote attached "Some people say hip-hop is dead. We just do this to make sure".

Guaranteed to make you laugh-

Okay, this post was originally going to be me ranting about DISAPPEARING TWEETS! (See below) but now, I've had to add to my list of vexes against Twitter, to include; unscheduled and scheduled maintenance, over capacity notices, background images disappearing, the inability to edit a post and being told to MOSEY ALONG!! WTF?

Disappearing Tweets: I'm gonna vent for a second. Recently my twitter posts have been disappearing into Twitter oblivion and it's REALLY pissing me off. Then I'd Tweet about how frustrating it is to have my Tweets pulling Houdini's on me, then THOSE tweets disappear TOO! GAHHH. I'm SOOO annoyed. I've complained to Crystal (the Twitter guru/techy) and still nada thing has changed. They claimed to have tweaked things and solved the problem, but it's STILL happening and it's SO irritating. It happens on our @SliceMag account (follow us y'all), as well as my personal account (i've lost like 43% of my tweets there) and I'm losing my mind. (GASP... I just had a revelation...I think I'm addicted to twitter... I BLAME YOU SULLYWOOD!!!).
Now that that's out of the way... to the post.

Well, if you haven't noticed yet, twitter is pretty much the most popular (IMO) social networking site online right now... and it's TOTALLY being run by hipsters ... and CNN.
Pretty much all the blogs worth following are on Twitter (ahem... Follow @SliceMag) as well as all of the cooler than cool self-indulgent celebs that are allowing fans a sometimes overly intimate look into their daily lives (i.e. Ashton: @plusk and his wifey Demi: @mrskutcher... who SAVED A LIFE ON TWITTER).

Twitter becomes more addicting and obsessive the more you Tweet and build your Twitter community. When you first start out, it's definitely bizarre and somewhat confusing (getting used to @replies and #followfriday type terminology. You can follow pretty much anyone on Twitter, (unless they have privacy settings, at which time they must approve you) but don't expect everyone you follow to follow you back (especially the cooler than cool celebs... they're far more interested in Tweeting their friends rather than responding to obsessive fans... not that I know from experience or anything).

Think of Twitter as a public text messaging service/2 sentence diary, where all of your texts create a long and continuous narcissistic thread that you can go back and reflect on when you have nothing better to do.

It's awesome and we encourage you all to get out there are check it out... and we promise...we'll always reply to your @replies, ('cause our heads aren't shoved too far up our own asses)

Yours Truly,
@SliceMag

On a totally RANDOM note... I'm watching ER and RORY from Gilmore Girls is on it! She still has that baby voice... Weeeeired (she's playing a DR).

Also... I wonder if you can be charged with harassment on Twitter? 'Cause we've been kinda harassing @petewentz... (we save those Tweets in our Favourites)

Update: So we recently had one of the most profound Twitter experiences. We put up the following quote by Torontonian, Ivor Tossel:
"Facebook is about people you used to know; Twitter is about people you’d like to know better”.
And suddenly we had people RT (Re-Tweet) it on their own twitter pages. (Like LOADS of people) It was a really bizarre experience. The Quote will be up in our Words to the Wise section on the side bar.

Comical Hip Hop Duo LMFAO and their hit, "I'm in Miami Bitch". These guys straddle the alt/hip-hop hipster line. The song is great though, don't you think?

Hipsters and Retro Kidz have many commonalities. One of them is their affinity for Dope Azz Kicks. Hipsters are mass consumers with a social conscience that only stretches so far (kind of like American Apparel).
Sure, some like to stick to the classic hipster look, wearing only Chucks or Vans (see above) , but with the introduction of Fly Azz Kidz like Pharrell and more recently Kanye (marketing to and profiting heavily from the hipster scene), runners/sneakers/trainers that are poppin' fresh, have become just as important as which bowler hat one should where out of the house that day.

Pitchfork reviews new music (mostly indie bands) and hosts an annual music hipster festival in Chicago.

On a side note, because we at SLICE follow Pitchfork on Twitter (ha), we were just informed that our Montreal lovers Arcade Fire are showing their new documentary film Arcade Fire: Miroir Noir on Pitchfork TV's One Week Only. So all you hipsters better go and check it out so that you'll have something to chat about while you're chilling in the Annex.

This film gives Canadians total Hipster cred...It's pretty effed up.

On a side note, has pitchfork become too pretentious with their reviews? Our friend at
Katuwapitiya thinks so.

Blue Velvet, David Lynch and 1986... It has all the Hipster Calling Cards; Cult classic film, it's Retro and of course David Lynch.

Also, it can be credited for the revival of PBR beer in Americas subculture scene.

I would argue that Canada doesn't have a PBR equivalent, because to Canadians all beer is good beer, and no Canadian hipster would dare disgrace the name of beer in an attempt at being ironic...pffft. They know better.

Never the less PBR has become synonymous with the hipster scene and is their preferred beverage of choice.

Obama Action figure.

No Hipsters bedroom would be complete without a button pin, T-shirt, book or Obama memento. You wouldn't have anything too boisterous like a poster though, that would be overkill (even though you've been tempted to buy that Obama/Lincoln pop art piece many times).

Have no fear, the Obama Action figure is here. It's subtle and totally post-modern and would fit in perfectly with your other ironic action heroes... only this has layerd irony so it's far BETTER.

Pick him up at your favourite apartment furnishings store, Urban Outfitters... better yet, order him online.

Change you can belive in,

These are Slanties. They are the newest hipster creation looking to replace the Kanye Shutter Shade as Williamsburg, Brooklyn's eye gear of choice (If you don't know what I'm talking about then you clearly live in a tiny town in bumfuck nowhere, where hipsters don't run rampant... aren't you blessed).

Made of natural wood grain and finished with a layer of fiberglass, these Slanties are a take on ancient Inuit Eye protectants.

I predict that in about 5 months from today, you'll see all the cooler than cool kids running around Queen Street W in these bad boys or it'll cause a major race riot. Either way, they'll be around...

Love it? Hate it?

Let us know,
