Toronto based band, These Three Cities have been a permanent fixture on the indie scene in TO since about '06, frequenting bars and clubs along Queen St W. They recently released a self-titled EP (June '08) which has further pushed the band into the conscious of music lovers across the city. The band has been building a strong reputation for the quality of their live show and has a number of fans and supporters from within the industry like producers Bob Ezrin, (Jane's Addiction, Kiss, Pink Floyd) and Brian Moncarz, (The Junction, We Are The Take). Their brand of Alt-Pop-Rock is definitely a stand out and we encourage you all to check them out.

Catch These Three Cities as they embark on their Cross-Canada tour which will take them all the way out to Vancouver BC. For tour dates click here.

I don't really know how I ended up on their myspace page, but I did... so who cares!!

The Limousines are a Californian duo, and as the legend goes; They were separated by an ocean working on independent projects and "met and fell in love on the Internet". Aww how cute...

There's Eric Victorino: Gosh, he's a fucking good writer. He makes you think, laugh and cry (all at the same time) AND he's got that God damn voice you can't stop listening to...
Then there's Gio, the guy who makes the beats, and he does it really well. You know...the kind of beats that stick in your head all day long (in a good way). Maybe it's just me, but if the beat isn't good (by which I mean, you can't help keeping the rhythm with your toes), the song basically sucks. Anyway before becoming "the-hot-guy-making-the-beats", he was (and still is I guess) known as Nozebleed ... making really fucking great music.

They are also on Twitter (is there anyone on earth not on Twitter yet ?!).
I'm from France and I'm new at this so just in case you didn't get what I've been saying so far: be clever, be smart, be sexy and go here.
Tomorrow you're gonna thank me for spreading the word today.

So, check them out, or I'm gonna cry ... You don't want me to cry, do you ?!

Bouby for SLICE =)

We recently entered the world of Look Book and planned on starting a book ourselves in order to feature some of the fantastic Canadian street style we come across on a daily basis. So we pulled some great looks at random and one of the looks we came across was my friend Bryanna (above + below). RANDOM! Check out her looks here.

How would we define Canadian style? Three Words: Comfort, Chill, Cool

On a side note, if someone can e-mail us a LookBook invite code that would be great.
Thanks

Smooth voiced Adaline, hailing from Vancouver, has been something of a social media phenomenon. No, she didn't gain attention from her Myspace, or blog or LastFM... she rose to social networking relevance through a chance meeting with Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson and a 140 character update on Twitter.

The story goes something like this: Adaline was at a Juno's after party where she bumped into Pattinson. After a short conversation, Adaline took to her twitter page and posted that she had just met the Twilight golden boy. The rest is history. This seemingly irrelevant tweet, led to RobPattznews twitter account posting about the chance meeting, which led to a steady stream of curious Twilight fans to her Myspace page resulting in a new and unexpected fanbase for Adaline's music. After mere hours of her Twitter update, the singer had received 1,000+ messages and over 25,000 plays from around the world. Here are some examples:
"I have to admit that I found you because of the Robert Pattinson story but I'm so thankful for it, otherwise I would have missed great music! I'm totally in love with your music now! Do you know if I can buy your CD in Europe?"

Another from Erika in Australia says, "Hi Adaline, I just discovered your music thanks to your account of how you met Robert Pattinson. I really love your work and I'm going to order your album from CD Baby as soon as I post this. Any chance you might tour Australia, some time?"
Adaline's complex musical compositions, often including an array of instruments and a multitude of sounds from rock to classical, are being compared to the likes of, Cat Power, Katie Melua and Fiona Apple. Her debut album, Famous for Fire, has been met with critical acclaim and excitement.

Upcoming shows can be found here.

So, we know seal hunting is a touchy subject...blah, blah, blah...but we at SLICE just had to post about this.

Our Governor General, the Queen's Representative in Canada, has in one swoop given a big Canadian F-U to the European Union- who have voted to impose a ban on seal products- by cutting the heart out of a freshly killed seal and eating it.... raw!

Michaëlle Jean was on a trip to Canada's Arctic, where she ate the heart of a seal on her first day in Nunavut, saying seal hunting is an ancient cultural ritual that was practiced humanely.

When asked if she was sending a message she said, "Take from it what you will."

The Americans are saying Michaëlle Jean is Canada's Sarah Palin, but we ask you, would Sarah Palin take the time to wipe her blood soaked fingers neatly on a napkin? We think not...Palin would probably lick her bloody fingers "finger-lickin'" clean!

Clubbed and dragged straight to your computer screen,

I'm sure many of you have heard about this album already, but if you haven't it is one download you must get your mouse on... Yes... I said DOWNLOAD!

Danger Mouse aka Brian Burton (Legendary DJ/producer behind the Jay Z/Beatles mash-up Grey Album and one half of the duo, Gnarls Barkley) has teamed up with Sparklehorse (YES... infamous indie electro-rock group led by Mark Linkous) and David-Lynch (all the hipsters out their just popped one in their pants) to produce an epic collaboration between some of the industries best. The albums songs were written by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse and David Lynch is credited for creating the 100+ photo book compilation which is to serve as a narrative to the accompanying music. The artists that they brought on board to perform are credited for having a hand in the composition and over all production of their track. Which artists are being featured on this album? The Flaming Lips, James Mercer of The Shins, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Iggy Pop, The Pixies, The Cardigans, Frank Black, Vic Chesnutt... I mean... the list goes on.
It almost sounds too good to be true right?... Well it almost was...

Due to a dispute with the label (EMI) the distribution of the album did not go according to plan and the artists decided to "stick-it-to-the-man" by releasing the album with a blank CD-R enclosed along with a note stating, "For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will." (Basically they are alluding to downloading the album illegally).

The album has yet to be officially released, and there is some doubt as to whether or not it ever will be. Burton is encouraging fans to get a copy of the album by any means necessary. The David Lynch Photographs are available for purchase from their website. It is limited to 5000 copies and it is being soled at $50.00 a pop.

The album can be streamed here and downloaded here

Enjoy this gift from the music gods,
SLICE

P.S. An exhibition will run in the Los Angeles Michael Kohn Gallery from May 30, showcasing the photographs alongside the music.

Tracklisting of 'Dark Night Of The Soul':
Revenge' (featuring The Flaming Lips)

So... I'm sure the regular readers of this blog have noticed that we've been lacking in terms of content. A lot of that has to do with the fact that we're looking for full time summer jobs/ working on redoing the blog/ it's summer and we're chilling!

Anyway, this is going to be a random post but I want to put it up. So I was reading the New York Times and they had a piece on Alexa Chung's move to NY to "save MTV". Anyway so there's this shot of her with a vintage WWII Union Jack flag Curtain in the background and I LOVE it! So I'm posting this up for any of you that know where one can be found. I'm hoping to get a UK flag and a Canadian flag too for my big re-move to London. So keep those eyes peeled friends and let me know if you come across one!

Thanks xoxox
Maria

Update: Found a gorgeous Red Ensign Canadian flag from '57. Bidding on a UK flag. Now on the hunt for an American flag for my potential roommate (she can't be left out of the flag love).

Degrassi rules the SLICE pages tonight. First it was Shenae Grime's Oscar worthy performance in the season finale of 90210. Now it's Aubrey "Drake" Graham... you know Jimi from Degrassi the Next Generation (before he graduated off the show) that was shot or something and ended up in a wheel chair.

Anyway, apparently he's a rapper now and is supposed to be Lil Wayne's protege (when the hell did this happen?) and he's been canoodling with Ri-bound-anna all over the NY.
Now, this is not a gossiping site, but when our Canucks do something that needs to be taken notice of (i.e. jamming your tongue down RiRi's throat) we're gonna post about it, especially when homeboys from Toronto.

Anyway, seriously... when did he start rapping and why didn't I know about this? Granted, I don't exactly stay up-to-date with my Degrassi Alumni, but... I'll do better I promise.
I'm not gonna talk trash about him cause he's Canadian (and from Toronto) and well... that's not the way we roll in the Tee-dot but I'm still kind of stunned (about his whole rapping career that I was completely unaware of).

(via people magazine)

On a side note... what's with all these Non-Canadian biddies coming north to our cities and stealing our men? Pshhh, they're sucking our town dry and I'm not impressed. (okay... in retrospect, I probably could have worded that differently)
I say we vote to close down the border... who's with us?

Skip ahead to 1:13 if you don't want to watch the cartoon

p.s.
Okay so I'm listening to Lykke Li right now and I've had the remix to her song Little Bit ft Drake on my ipod for ages and would listen to it once in a while, but I had NO idea it was HIM!! I'm totally tripping out right now. Homeboys been littered all over my ipod and I didn't even know who he was.
update- I was listening to my ipod again, and i just found a Santogold song feat him (a remix of unstoppable)

Last night (May 19th) was the Season finale of 90210 and Annie Wilson finally blows the roof off the joint. Annie got SO pissed off she almost crapped a quarter. I won't ruin the finale for any of you folk across the world that haven't had the displeasure of watching it as yet, but I will leave you with some priceless photos of Shenae's performance. Homegirl had me laughing so hard I almost threw up (I'm not joking... I have a sensitive gag reflex). Basically the finale consisted of lots-o-tears and lots-o-broken-hearts, then some random shit at the end.

Here are the pics of our chica from the T-dot-oh in scenes from the Season Finale of 90210 (Girlfriend is clearly trying to pass a Kidney stone or something... give her some room)

I LOVE THIS BAND!!! I didn't think I would to be honest. I heard they were doing the whole "reggae" thing a la Sublime, and I immediately dismissed them. After a few days I came 'round and decided I'd give them a listen and boy was I impressed.

Picture beautiful British Columbia. The mountains, the ocean, the endless forests...the weed(?) Now picture a montage of all of your favourite outdoor activities; camping, swimming, kayaking, surfing, snowboarding, hiking, chilling at the cottage, lazy summer nights... etc etc. Their music would be the background track to your montage.

Enter, The Wilderness Crew. Brett Mjanes, Eli Dill, and Eric Amberg, three emcees from Sunshine Coast, BC, have a great sound. They've merged the chill of reggae, the swagger of hip-hop, the cool of rock and the fun of pop to create a truly unique blend completely they're own. I'm not sure what to call it, but their tunes are definitely perfect for hanging out with friends around the fire pit this summer. So grab your favourite strain of BC kush and get to toking to The Wilderness Crew, my new band for the summer that captures the Canadian spirit to the core.

Loving them,

I'm so out of tune with the rest of the world when it comes to "popular" music it's ridiculous. I didn't know who Katy Perry and Lady Gaga were until like... October.. I'm not even joking! Mercy's floral jacket, at right, and Diane von Furstenberg's version at left.

Diane Von Furstenberg has been accused of "copying" the design of a struggling Toronto designer and said victim in this controversy is being paid handsomely to shut the fuck up and not make a fuss about it.

Red flags are being waved across Toronto's fashion district over this ongoing controversy. Apparently one of Diane Von Furstenberg's many "hired helpers" who designs for the designer has copied Toronto designers, Mercy's, floral jacket (everything except the print anyway), which brings to a head the issue of intellectual property laws. The irony in this controversy is the fact that Von Furstenberg "is the president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and is in the front lines in the battle to create legislation, called The Design Piracy Prohibition Act, aimed at thwarting those guilty of the very infraction of which she is accused." - Toronto Star

She has been handling the issue quietly and appropriately. Immediately conceding to Mercy as well as firing the "hired helper" and offering remuneration to the designers.

So we were gonna go all out for this post and create a pimpin' video... but we're lazy, so that didn't happen. (It's on the back burner... maybe when we've all got time in our schedules we'll make it happen)

A while back we were shooting the breeze with some twitter tweople and we decided we wanted to form a gang when we got old. A motorized wheel chair gang, for grandmas with deceased husbands only. One of our favourite tweople, our gal @mspuppette, was totally down to join our gang. We'd rob liquor stores, and chase young hoodlum scallywags. We'd sleep with bikers and murder their wives. We'd rave all night, and do E with our grand kids. We have it all planned out. We're gonna buy the wheel chairs early and pimp them out now that our backs are still good. Then, we'll keep the chairs in our garage, only to see the light of day when we get our first hip replacement... or when our husbands die (everyone knows that women live longer than men).

We're creating this Thelma and Louise pact (without the suicide part) and are extending an open invitation to you, our blog friends, to join our elderly gang. If you wanna get down with the dopest gang in our future hood, then drop us a comment.

People that know the music of Peaches either LOVE her or HATE her.

If you hate her...mosey along
If you love her...OMG DID YOU GET HER NEW ALBUM? Wicked awesome eh? A bit dif, with the solid vocals and what not. Not too much like her old stuff, but still stellar.

Peaches is a Torontonian electro (etc) musician now based in Berlin (DYK she once roommed with Fiest?). She's an extremely controversial artist who in the past worked to blur the sex/gender lines and rode the wave of androgeny into counter-culture sucess. Her newest album is entitled, I Feel Cream and was released in North America May 5th 2009.

OH.MY.GOD... You guys have to listen to this shit.

Okay, first of all this emo act--Cobra Starship-- is associated with Pete Wentz (they're signed to his label...which we won't mention) so we automatically dislike like them (sorry, but that's the way it works in our universe).

Leighton Meester aka Bitchy Blair of Gossip Girl is featured on the track entitled "Good Girls Go Bad". Suffice it to say that the song is absolute CRAP (we can't think of a more apropos noun).
If you haven't heard yet... Meester has launched a singing career and will be dropping her first album in the fall. The girls chords aren't too bad... but teaming up with these guys? Seriously... Listen below

Okay, we may as well continue on with the music/waffles blog posting trend we've got going on right now.
So, as you know (because we've mentioned it like a trillion times) we met up with Waffles of Waffles+Falafels last week. One of the many things we chatted about was his protege, Sky Ferreira, a 16 year-old California based singer with more drive than your grandmas auto chair (look for that post later). Sky's a talented singer with incredible range, varying from soulful gospel to electronic pop. She's been busy at work getting ready to sign a major record deal as well as releasing some long-awaited much whispered about tuneage.
Sky recently teamed up with The Shoes to work on a remix of that great track by The Virgins... Teen Lovers. (Listen Below) Watch this space for more Sky Ferreira tracks.

Teen Lover | Music UploadSpeaking of The Virgins.... They're gonna be in Vancouver on May 15th at Biltmore Cabaret (so all you West Coasters get your tix now, they're only $13 bucks for fuck sakes!) The Virgins are currently on an American tour in support of their debut album, The Virgins (2008)... check out their tour schedule here. These guys have got the total makings to be a really successful band (Major Record Label Deal+Awesome Music+That "Indie" Look+Music Festival Appearences+Background Gossip Girl Music=SWOON). Keep an eye out for their second record to drop! Listen to: The Virgins- Rich Girl

Which brings us to French DJs, The Shoes. These guys have remixed pretty much every song ever (Santogold "Lights Out", Wiley "Wearing my Rolex", Adam Kesher "Modern Times", The list goes on). Blah blah blah they're awesome check them out. Listen to: The Shoes = Knockout

Okay, we're trying to get our shit together and get organised. We've told you guys countless times that we're like... way backlogged, but now that it's summer and we're finished uni we can get all caught up with "the scene" and update you all on Canada's finest.

So we've been stuck in our e-mail inbox like a fat kid in a cat flap and we're going to slowly bring you the news. (These e-mails go back to April 2nd y'all, so don't expect miracles).

Our first backlogged e-mail post will be on Black Hat Brigade. These guys are an experimental punk band from Brampton Ontario (that's where Michael Cera's from) and are based in Toronto. They're currently touring the Ontario/Quebec area and will be finishing the tour at Toronto's NXNE fest at the Drake Hotel (great spot for indie band shows ppl).

So these guys are re-DONK-ulously amazing... if you're into the whole, lazy melancholy drugged up comedown tunes. Their 2008 EP, Fathers was lauded by the Toronto "indie scene" and they've been named a "group that people need to notice" by NOW magazine.

They are currently attempting to put out their first LP, also entitled Fathers, and are asking fans to join the Donation Program IE, donate some cashola to help make the record a reality and you'll receive a copy of the Fathers EP.

Kuduro is a style of music that first emerged in Angola. It is characterized by the mixing of African drum samples with the Caribbean soca and calypso genres to create a more upbeat style of its Caribbean variants. The music is then given an electronica overbeat, a genre which has been growing more and more popular in Angola since the late 80s.

Kuduro music and dance was immediately picked up in the Afro-Portuguese regions of Portugal due to the large number of Angolan immigrants. As a result the Kuduro genre was able to gain wide spread success and attention within Western Europe.

From Portugal's Kuduro scene rose Buraka Som Sistema in 2006. They are the most popular Lisbon based Kuduro band due to their incredibly successful single Yah! They have performed at Glastonbury and Roskilde (two of the largest music festivals in the world) as well as having worked with acclaimed artists such as M.I.A., Saborosa and Puto Prata and being featured on our favourite show ever, Skins. They have since been picked up by the Sony BMG label and have released a second album, Black Diamond (2008).

Here's Buraka Som Sistema - Sound of Kuduro feat MIA, DJ Znobia and Saborasa and Puto Prata (filmed in Angola)

You have the option of adding a topping such as ice cream, Nutella, strawberries, whipped cream etc for a fee of between $1.50 and $3 (depending on what you get).

Wanda stays true to Belgian waffle form, even including the traditional sugary chunks that make Belgian waffles so unique. I have tried many Belgian waffles at home and abroad, store bought, vendor bought and restaurant bought and I must say that Wanda really does hold her own.

I've overheard the occasional complaint about the waffles in general, being overpriced, too small or most hilariously, containing the little sugar chunks, but to them I say "FUFF", her waffles are awesome and authentic. If you don't like them pick up some fucking Eggos.

Vancouver: Patisserie Lebeau 1728 West 2nd Avenue, 604-731-3528

Okay, First I want to comment on something... everything in Vancouver looks so fresh and so clean.... that is all.

Patisserie Lebeau was opened in Vancouver in 1995 by Belgian couple, Oliver and Penny Lebeau. Since opening the patisserie "the Brussels waffle, the centerpiece of our weekend menu, has been such a hit...that our loyal customers are willing to wait in line for our standout signature treat".

As it goes, the waffle is only offered on the weekends, at which point health-conscious Vancouverites ditch the yoga and Lululemon for an afternoon and wait in lines down the block to consume this sweet confectionery. Lebeau is one of the only places in Vancouver where Belgian waffles are sold and they have wisely taken advantage of this fact and currently produce the waffles for retail and wholesale consumption across the province of British Columbia.

You can also find Belgian waffles for sale in Montreal at Creperie du Marche at the Jean-Talon Market. However, they are not made fresh to order.

Enjoy-

So a while back we were on twitter (yes y'all, TWITTER... just assume that whenever we reference something it's going to somehow lead back to twitter) and we came across Waffles + Falafels, a T-shirt apparel company based out in Vancouver. We inadvertently began following them and they immediately sent us a tweet (I don't remember what they said exactly, but it was incredibly random). Intrigued by the nonsensical tweet we had received from the @wafflesgirls we decided to click on their weblink, which led us to their myspace page. It was here that we discovered the Waffles + Falafels phenomenon. These girls have been featured in Nylon, Missbehave, Prim and numerous other magazines, blogs and media platforms. They've been taking over social media one network at a time and are leaving a devoted cult following in their wake.

Today we caught up with THEE Waffles himself (the W+F creator) in Toronto. He gave us the DL on how the brand got started, how the Waffles Girls came about, their new spring collection, we even chatted a little bit about Waffles Girl, Sky Ferreira aka"Youngest in Charge", and the future of Waffles + Falafels.

We'll be bringing you that interview as soon as we edit the video... (so like... next week sometime), but for the time being, check out the oldschool W+F interview we found on youtube... they be some crazy azz mofo's y'all.

Totally worth your time,
SLICE
Okay you may be wondering why Waffles is all blurred out whenever he speaks. According to him he doesn't really like to do interviews etc and prefers to be behind the scenes and let the waffles girls take the wheel, so the girls thought it would be funny to blur out his face and alter his voice when they uploaded the interview on youtube.

Okay, I had to do a post on the company My Pretty Pink Box.
So spring has finally sprung (lame line, I know) and because I rarely wear make-up--or do anything to my skin for that matter--during the winter, I decided to go on a MASSIVE beauty products spending spree (I'm disgusted with myself).

I've been getting a lot of product tips and make-up advice on twitter from tons of different beauty tweeters. Some tweople have suggested I purchase Ponds Cold Cream as my nightly face cream, others swear buy Johnson's baby shampoo as a make-up remover or to get rid of pink eye, and others suggested I pick up make-up brushes from Michael's rather than MAC (I found a great Youtube video on it too). It has all been incredibly informative and quite fascinating. I've been told that Prescriptives custom blend is the greatest foundation out there, that eye lash tinting DOESN'T WORK, Neutrogena Comforting Body Butter is "the best ever", and that Cover Girls Lashblast is the best mascara known to man. Basically, I received a free beauty education by product junkies that have tried everything on the market, and really know their shit.

I picked up the fore mentioned products along with many many others suggested by my tweeters and have thus far been completely blown away by the results (especially by my Lashblast buy... that shit is DA BOMB). It's my opinion that twitter is completely revolutionizing the beauty market. You can receive "in-real-time" reviews and opinions of various products as well as suggestions and first hand experience by tweople who are all willing to lend a helping hand.

While on Twitter I stumbled upon My Pretty Pink Box, a company based in California which provides a box full of beauty samples to people across Canada and the U.S. for a very reasonable price. So, as I always do when looking for a visual review, I headed to Youtube in order to find videos reviewing My Pretty Pink Box and to find out exactly what is in said "pink box".

Basically, it's a pretty pink box full of various make-up and beauty samples from different brands. The cost of the box is about $15.00 inc. shipping, or you can buy a bag for about $11.00. The products are switched up each month and as a result MPPB has become incredibly popular among make-up and beauty fiends. The boxes regularly sell out as soon as they go on sale (May's boxes have already sold out) so you must snap them up quickly. It seems like a really good deal for the amount of products you receive and the minimal price you pay and I'll definitely be looking into picking up a MPPB in June.

I thought I'd share this discovery with you in case any of you are interested in beauty samples.

Thanks lovelies,
Maria
